CBI probe sought into encroachment

A group of environmentalists have demanded a CBI probe into the Nelliampathy encroachment issue, and alleged high-level corruption in Nelliampathy.

‘Paristhithi Patana Sangham, chairman John Peruvanthanam told reporters here that the Parambikulam Aliyar Dam constructed for water diversion to Tamil Nadu has affected the environment in Nelliampathy.

He said the Nelliampathy issue does not merely impact the 56 estates in the area.

“By constant encroachment activities the whole ecology has been affected. The forest in the area is a major source of water in the rivers that flow through Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts. About 65 lakh people depend on these rivers for potable water.

“This area is a habitat for several kinds of animals and plants. The area is decisive in terms of climate control in the state. However, encroachment has affected the eco-system,” he said.
