Mumbai: It was an emotional upsurge and the Bollywood biggies started it with all earnestness. But little did they realise that their signature campaign in support of Sanjay Dutt might run foul with the judiciary.
So, when they got the wind of the fact that their action might invite contempt proceedings, the Bollywood stars quickly called off their campaign and decided to sit back and watch what waits the Dutt Junior.
Last week, members of the film industry, including director Pahlaj Nihalani, had decided to launch a signature campaign on December 12 to express their support to the actor ahead of his sentencing in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.
The signature campaign was to be held for a day at the Film City in suburban Goregaon where members of film industry - from spot boys to actors, producers and directors - were to come together to show their support for Sanjay whom they all love.
Then came the threat of contempt notice. And Bollywood's overzealous plans in support of Munnabhai were shelved in the next minute.
On Friday, Sanjay Dutt himself had appealed to the film industry to withdraw the signature campaign, fearing further damage. "He has appealed to the industry not to have any prayer meetings or any campaigns of any kind, because it is the word of the law that matters in this case. All this will achieve nothing," Dutt's lawyer Farhana Shah said on Sunday.
"In fact, even the signature campaign was a creation of the media. Sanjay spoke to Suneil Shetty and others and they denied that there was any move of this kind. Sanjay recognises that all this is nothing before the law of the land," she said.
In a letter, Dutt himself said that he and his family were not aware of the campaign. "We were totally in the dark about this and my sisters were taken aback by this gesture," he said.
