In an early morning swoop, the Special Task Force (STF) of Bihar Police arrested a person from Patna Junction and seized Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) of the purported value of Rs 10 lakh from him.
Inspector General (Operations) Amit Kumar said the arrested person has been identified as Mina Jod of Malda district in West Bengal. The fake notes are in the denomination of Rs 1,000 and are of very high quality.
"The operation was conducted on the basis of intelligence developed by our team. Mina had boarded Farakka Express at Malda on Tuesday and arrived at Patna Junction on Wednesday. He was supposed to hand over the consignment to another person here," said Kumar.
The IG (Operations) and STF personnel kept a watch but the receiver did not turn up. They then nabbed Mina before he could disappear in the crowd of railway passengers. He was carrying the FICN consignment in a simple cloth bag used to carry grocery.
"On preliminary interrogation, Mina revealed that the FICN came from Bangladesh and were handed over to him by a person in Malda. According to our intelligence sources, these notes were printed in Pakistan and then brought to Bangladesh. Their quality is very good and common people would have taken them to be genuine," added Kumar.
Police said two more accomplices of Mina were travelling in other coaches of the Farakka Express and they managed to escape. However, leads provided by the arrested person are being followed.
The sources also said that Kaliachak in Malda district has emerged as a hub of the FICN being pushed into India via Bangladesh. Most of the fake notes carriers arrested in eastern states have lifted their consignment from there.
Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged in this connection at the police station of the Economic Offences Unit of Bihar Police. The arrested will be produced in the local court after interrogation.
