New Delhi: An Indian rower became the first person to row across the Atlantic Ocean unassisted after a 106-day journey.
Bhavik Gandhi, 30, took a leaf out of Christopher Columbus' book as he followed the same route across the ocean, as he became only the 33rd person to have rowed across an ocean.
Bhavik set out from La Restinga in the Canary Islands to Antigua on his boat 'Miss Olive', covering close to 3000 nautical miles in the process.
The rower reached Jabberwock Beach, Antigua after a 106-day voyage. During his journey, his boat capsized 200 kms from the destination but he managed to steer the boat by rowing with a spare oar.
In the process, he also became the first Asian to complete an ocean rowing expedition solo and unassisted.
Born in Mumbai but now a Sweden resident, Gandhi's record will be certified by the Ocean Rowing Society.
In a letter to IBNLive.com on April 26, 2006, Bhavik had written that he had aborted his attempt to cross the Atlantic till after the hurricane season. Bhavik resumed his voyage in October, 2006.
He had originally planned his attempt from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua.
Gandhi's boat had no sails, motors or support ship and he relied only on his muscle power. Only 32 people have survived the arduous journey.
