Communal clashes which broke out here on Sunday night have claimed two lives, with police confirming the death of a second person on Monday.
While Asif Mahammod Managaonkar (32) was reportedly killed on Sunday night, another person Chetan Patil (26) was said to have been stabbed to death soon after.
Another person Sameer Marihal (22), who was seriously injured, has been admitted to the ICU of KLE Hospital and is said to be critical.
The district administration has clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPc for two days from Monday.
While Asif, a resident of Chavadi Galli, was killed when a mob of around 50 people attacked him, Chetan Patil of Gadhingalaj in Maharashtra, was stabbed to death near Fort area, in a possible retaliation for the attack on Asif.
Patil had completed his MBBS at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Belgaum and was doing his PG at Bagalkot.
Trouble started when a group of around 50 people took out a procession on Vishnu Galli after winning a trophy at a tableaux competition in connection with Shivaji Jayanti Utsav organised by a local organisation on Sunday evening.
When residents of the street objected to sloganshouting and bursting of firecrackers in front of a prayer hall, there were heated arguments, leading to clashes, during which Asif was injured.
He was declared brought dead by district hospital doctors.
Patil was stabbed at Fort area while he was going to catch a bus to his village after watching a film.
Meanwhile, acting on a tip-off, Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil along with his team stormed into a house at Vishnu Galli in Vadgaon, arrested 15 persons and seized sickles, knives and other sharpedged weapons from their possession here in the wee hours of Monday.
Over 35 others were arrested from a few houses in the neighbouring areas later.
Deserted Look
The Belgaum city wore a deserted look on Monday, with all schools and colleges remaining closed.
Even buses and autorickshaws were not plying.
Several morning walkers were lathi-charged by the police, who were more hard on general public in sensitive areas like Vadgaon, Old Pune-Bangalore Road, and bus stand and the surrounding areas.
Also they came down heavily on businessmen, who tried to carry on their business behind half-closed shutters.
Buses to ply today
While both the City Bus Terminal and the Central Bus Stand premises were seen empty throughout Monday, the NWKSRTC said it would run buses on city and rural routes.
Even private passenger carriers said it would ply its busess in the city. The Education Department has announced that schools in city limits will function on Tuesday
