BANGALORE: “Funds are not a constraint. You must take the initiative and begin work,” Commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Siddaiah told one of the executive engineers at Ulsoor lake where the Palike conducted an intensive cleaning drive on Saturday morning. After repeated requests from the Residents Welfare Association at Ulsoor, the Commissioner, along with local MLA Roshan Baig, Councillor Uday Kumar and a team of workers from BBMP came at 6 am to begin the cleaning drive. At the lake, the focus was on cleaning and tackling unauthorised fishing. Siddaiah spoke to the representatives of the residents welfare organizations, BBMP Executive Engineers and other residents to find out more about the problems.Deploying home guards, laying of a jogging track and construction of sedimentation tanks were some other measures that he sanctioned on the spot.Stopping at places where some garbage needed to picked up or a hanging electric cable needed to be fixed, he asked his team of engineers to take note of the problems and ensure that some action was taken immediately.Ensuring a proper system for rain water drains, planting more trees around the lake, levelling of the footpath to ease the difficulties faced by pedestrians and to penalise people for violating building norms were some among the measures that were discussed during the drive.“We are very happy that the commissioner has come personally and seen the condition of the area. This is his third visit and the area is looking clean for the first time,” said Purushottam, President of the Residents Welfare Association.
