Bangalore: The BBMP has cleared most of the garbage piled in the city on Sunday, but is yet to start sanitisation of places where garbage was dumped to get rid of the stink and mosquito menace. The BBMP ferried 900 truckloads (about 5,200 tonnes) of garbage on Sunday and is hoping to clear the rest in a day or two. Sources said about 5,000 tonnes of garbage still needs to be cleared.
Though the BBMP’s action comes as a relief to Bangaloreans, the stink and fastbreeding mosquitoes at places where garbage was dumped continue to haunt people. Water-clogging in many areas owing to heavy rains on Saturday has only added to the problem.
Standing Committee Chairman for Health and Family Welfare, Venkatesh Babu, accepted BBMP’s failure to Express. But he was quick to add that sanitisation would begin from Monday. The BBMP had stocked up 594 cans (25 lt each) of odorisers and spraying would start tomorrow (Monday), he added. “Three persons will be deployed in each ward for spraying,” he said. BBMP sources said people are planning protests in Mandur and Terra Firma near Doddaballapur also.
