CHENNAI: The Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight, which is being jointly organised by public sector oil and gas companies, was inaugurated here on Tuesday by M P Nirmala, Secretary, Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The fortnight is observed every year across the country in the month of January. The initiative of the fortnight is to create an awareness among the general public on the need to conserve precious petroleum products.During the period, public sector oil giants such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and the Hindustan Petroleum will hold various programmes, including seminars and competitions to raise awareness on the precious nature of petroleum products.The fortnight is being observed by entities belonging to various sectors, including domestic, transportation and agriculture, to enhance awareness on right conservation practices in a bid to save fuel in their respective functional areas.Nirmala said that research and development should be undertaken to discover new types of fuel. V K Jaychandran, state coordinator for the oil industry in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and the executive director of Indian Oil, underscored the need to judiciously use fuel as over 80 per cent of our crude requirements are imported. Earlier, P Rajendran, regional level coordinator and general manager of Indian Oil, administered the pledge on oil conservation. V Sivakumar, chief regional coordinator, Petroleum Conservation Research Association, was also present.
