New Delhi: The long-rumoured next-gen iPad is finally out. Apple has unveiled its new iPad, named "iPad Air". The iPad Air has a 9.7-inch Retina display and a smaller bezel. It is 43 per cent thinner. The Apple iPad Air is 7.5mm thin, and is 20 per cent thinner the outgoing model. It weighs 1 pound - down from 1.4 pounds.
It is powered by Apple's A7 chip and also has M7 Motion co-processor under the hood. Apple CEO Tim Cook says, the Apple iPad Air ofers up to 8x faster performance and, 72x faster graphics performance. It has a Retina Display and is 2x faster at opening files.
The Apple iPad Air features a 5 megapixel iSight camera and 1080p FaceTime camera. It includes dual micrphones. It is claimed to offer 10 hours of battery life. The Apple iPad Air will come in two colours - silver and white, space gray and black.
The prices of the Apple iPad Air start at $499. The 16GB WiFi-only model will cost $499, while the 16GB WiFi+cellular model is priced at $629.
The iPad Air will go on sale starting November 1 and start at $499, while the iPad 2 will continue selling at $399.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said Apple has sold 170 million iPads since the tablets launched three years ago.
Apple, which jumpstarted the tablet computing market in 2010 with the first iPad, has already come under increasing pressure from cheaper devices ranging from Amazon's Kindle Fire to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Note.
Longer term however, investors hope to see real device innovation from a company that has not unveiled a new breakthrough product in years.
Cook on Tuesday dismissed the competition as directionless.
The company sold 14.6 million iPads in the June quarter, down 14 percent from the same time last year. The iPad's market share has been eroding compared with cheaper rivals running Google Inc.'s Android operating system.
