Islamabad: A journalist was beaten up here allegedly by policemen, a media report said on Monday.

The attack comes less than a month after another journalist, Saleem Shahzad, was murdered.

"Four persons wearing police uniforms stopped me...and started beating me," Dawn quoted Waqar Kiani as saying.

"I have injuries in the back and on my face. They had come in a police van."

The assailants left a wounded Kiani on the road. He was later taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences.

Dawn said that Kiani, who worked for Guardian, was apparently attacked over his appearance in a TV talk show a few days ago.

The media community has already demanded stringent action against the killers of Saleem Shahzad, 40, who was kidnapped in Islamabad May 29. His body, bearing marks of severe torture, was found dumped in a canal in Punjab province two days later.

He is widely believed to have been seized by intelligence officials for alleging in an article that terrorists attacked a key naval base in Karachi May 22 after the navy refused to free sailors held for suspected militant links.
