Air Force, Army chiefs disagree on conscription
Marshal Fali Major said compulsory military service in India is a bad idea.

New Delhi: Air Force chief Fali Major on Monday said that conscription or compulsory military service in India is a bad idea.

His comments directly contradict Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor's view on the matter.

"I've read about this only in the newspapers. Nobody has told me about this in the capacity of Chief of Air Staff. I'll be speculating if I say anything, but I personally feel that conscription is not the answer,” Air Marshal Major stated.

On Army Day, in January, General Kapoor had said that there was a huge deficiency of officers – to the tune of 11,200 – in the Army. He had also noted that a point of concern was that most applying to the armed forces were “not the right material”.

''Compulsory military service could be one of the avenues before the government sometime in the future, but it is not the stage for such a step now,'' he had stated.
