TIRUCHY: The announcement of candidates for the 10 Mayor seats by the AIADMK has put the ball in the court of DMDK, which should now decide whether it is willing to share the corporation wards, municipalities and town panchayats alone. As the party had obtained 41 out of 234 seats in Assembly polls, which amounted to about 17.5 per cent of the total seats, it was expecting at least 20 per cent of the total number of corporations and other urban local bodies.Since, the number of corporations was 10, the DMDK was hoping to get at least two Mayor seats and 30 municipalities. However, following the announcement of candidates by the AIADMK for all the 10 Mayor seats, the ruling party has made it clear that talks could be held only for sharing of municipalities, corporation wards and town panchayats. Now, the ball lies in the DMDK’s court.District functionaries of DMDK, who were earlier asserting that the alliance with the AIADMK would continue, struck an apprehensive and cautious note on Friday and said ‘it is up to the leadership to take a decision’.Leaders of the Left parties revealed that they too had given a list of Mayor seats, in the hope of getting at least one of them. Although, the Left parties had not held a Mayor post earlier, they had sought allocation of Mayor posts in Tirupur, Erode, Tiruchy, Madurai and Nellai in the hope of getting at least one each. Reacting cautiously, Left leaders said they were waiting for further moves by the AIADMK.
