The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will fence a major portion of the strategic IndiaMyanmar border and a 10km stretch in Manipur has already been covered

Days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that India’s open borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh will be fenced, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been tasked to fence a major portion of the strategic India-Myanmar border. Meanwhile, a 10-km stretch in Manipur has already been covered, PTI reported citing a senior official.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has identified around 1,700 km of fencing that needs to be done, BRO’s Additional Director General (East) PKH Singh said.

The organisation has already finished fencing 10 km along the border in Manipur’s Moreh, which was handed over to the Assam Rifles, Singh added.

Why India-Myanmar Border is Being Fenced?

The Union government’s decision to fence the India-Myanmar border came after hundreds of Myanmar soldiers were believed to have crossed the border as fighting between rebel forces in Myanmar and the junta-regime intensified in the past few months.

The Myanmar soldiers have currently taken refuge in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district after their camps were captured by the Arakan Army (AA) militants – an ethnic armed group in the western Myanmar state of Rakhine.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday announced that India’s open borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh will be fenced.

“Our borders with Myanmar is an open border. The Narendra Modi government has decided to protect the India-Myanmar border…and we will work towards building fence in the entire border area (with Myanmar) on par with the borders with Bangladesh,” Shah said.
