New Delhi: Sania Mirza defeated 12th seed and doubles partner Shahar Peer of Israel in the first round of the $13,40,000 WTA Acura Classic in San Diego (California) on Tuesday.
The Indian won in a tough three setter 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to move into the second round where she will meet Eleni Daniilidou of Greece.
The Acura Classic tournament will not be there in next year's WTA calendar.
Both Sania and Peer fought for two hours and three minutes in a match that saw many lengthy baseline rallies.
Sania's strong forehand finally let her prevail over Peer. There were a combined 15 service breaks in the match.
After splitting the first two sets, Sania opened the final set by holding serve and breaking Peer to take a 4-1 lead.
