New Delhi: After evading arrest for two days, murdered teenager Aarushi Talwar's mother Nupur Talwar finally made an appearance in the Supreme Court on Friday. The CBI had been hunting for Nupur Talwar to arrest her after a non-bailable warrant was issued against her.
The CBI chose not to arrest Nupur Talwar before she was entering the courtroom. During the hearing of Nupur's petition the CBI told the apex court that the agency would wait for the court's order before taking any action. Nupur Talwar's lawyer had on Thursday moved the Supreme Court to cancel the non-bailable warrant against her.
If the court rejects her plea, the CBI can arrest Nupur Talwar right after the court hearing is over.
While CBI sources said that Nupur Talwar had been absconding, her lawyer Mukul Rohatgi denied such reports saying that she would appear before the Supreme Court on Friday.
The CBI carried out raids in Central and South Delhi in the past two days, searching for Nupur Talwar. Sources in the CBI said her husband Rajesh Talwar was also untraceable.
Nupur Talwar failed to appear before a special CBI court on Wednesday despite a deadline given to her, following which the CBI asked the court to issue a warrant against her. The CBI team that went to arrest Nupur Talwar returned empty handed on Wednesday. She was not at home. A Ghaziabad court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Nupur for not appearing before it.
Aarushi's father Dr Rajesh Talwar was present in court for the hearing on Wednesday.
Rajesh Talwar and his wife Nupur have been accused by the CBI of being involved in the murder of their teenaged daughter Aarushi in May 2008.
Aarushi, 14, was found dead inside her Noida residence in May, 2008 with her throat slit and the body of the Talwars' domestic servant Hemraj was recovered from the terrace hours later.
An outcry against the shoddy investigation by Uttar Pradesh police had led to the then Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh handing over the case to the CBI.
