CHENNAI: Today, in the arena of carnatic music presentation, if you come across a senior musician insisting on originality, refusing to tailor the presentation for mere approbation, then that musician is, without doubt, one of the ‘true Inheritors’ of divine music.   With a voice trained to resound richly, in the middle and higher octaves, sustaining the karvais of length and power, senior vocalist Sugantha Kalamegam presented her concert with gusto for the Brahma Gana Sabha. She is a disciple of maestro TK Govinda Rao, whose tutelage has made her blossom into a matured artiste. Beginning with Pantuvarali varnam (Sami Nine Kori) of Veena Kuppaiyer, in Raga Sankarabharanam, she transcended to Raga Sahana (Urakee Kalguna) in Misrachapu of Thyagaraja. Her alapana and technique of interpretation of Kirthana, smacked of emphatic accentuation, with a zeal to characterise, the marvelous style of her mentor.   Enneramum Oru Kaalai Thooki of Marimutha Pillai presented next was prefaced by a well knit Thodi Alapana that was imbued with sufficient musical imagination, to which, Padma Sankar (violin) responded with confidence. Her dexterity of bowing, gave away her tutelage under legendary Lalgudi Jayaraman.  Bhagayanae) in Raga Chandrajyothi of Thyagaraja presented earlier, had a strong listener’s appeal when presented with a divine power. Sugantha Kalamegam, impressed the audience, with her earnest search for intrinsic excellence, and with her style of vocal artistry, distinct of the school, to which she belongs.
