THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Sainik School, Kazhakkoottam, witnessed a unique thanksgiving ceremony on Saturday when the school and the Old Boys’ Association paid tributes to the pioneer and veteran retired masters of the school. The function organised as part of the golden jubilee had about 22 masters attending, who lived and served their entire working life on the school campus, acting as surrogate parents, and teachers for the cadets of the school. Speaking on the occasion, Prem Chandran Nair, a former English teacher, invoked the spirit of the poem ‘Vitai Lampada’ by Sir Henry Newbolt on public schools and asked his students to ‘Play Up’, overcoming all adversaries. Prema Chandran Nair, while expressing his sentiments, also said that there is no equivalent phrase in the English language for the word ‘Guruthwam.’ Lieutenant General Thomas Mathew (Retd), member, Armed Forces Tribunal, Kochi, expressed the gratitude of the Old Boys fraternity and pointed that all of them owed their success in life to the masters. He also exhorted the cadets of the school to strive for excellence in whatever they do. Group Captain B Janardhanan, Principal, Sainik School, read out a message from Air Marshal S P Singh, Air Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Air Command and Chairman, Local Board Administration, lauding the initiative. Earlier in the day, 12 flames were lit in the foyer of the school, in remembrance of the departed among the teachers, students and staff of the school. Floral wreaths were placed in the ‘Stupa of Remembrance’.
