HYDERABAD: With ‘I am Anna’ bandanas on their foreheads, T-shirts of Anna Hazare, Gandhi topi and waving Indian flags, Hyderabadis got down on the streets on a rainy Sunday morning, to show their overwhelming support to the anti-corruption movement. Holding posters like “If 74-year-old Anna can kick corruption, why can’t I?”, more than 8,000 people gathered at the People’s Plaza on a rainy morning, to raise their voice in support of Anna. A rally which continued to Sanjeeviah Park and back showed the people wanted a change and are backing Anna Hazare to achieve it.One of the coordinators of the Anna Against Corruption movement, Sai Vijay Kumar, a software engineer says, “We have been taking leave from work to support Anna’s cause. It is the sixth day of his fast and we are with him.” He also said different youth groups and NGOs volunteered for the rally. “The rally is open for anybody and everybody who wants to support the cause. We also tried to create awareness about the Lokpal bill by distributing printed material about the bill so people have a clear idea of what they are supporting,” said Kumar. The rally was not just about shouting slogans and marching but also brain-storming sessions. Many groups sat and debated on the issue and discussed about coming up with small measures of curbing corruption. The rally visited the Dharna Chowk in Indira Park, where people have been on a hunger strike and the same group will participate in the candlelight march, to be held every evening at People’s Plaza till Anna Hazare fasts.Shreyan Reddy, one of the participants said, “It’s not about what one man wants. We should realise corruption is affecting the entire country. We should learn to stand up for ourselves so our future generation will not be victims.” He also said,” Many people have been criticising the movement sitting back at home. What they should know is, here is one man not fighting for his personal cause. This might not completely take away corruption but at least its a start.”
