7 names shortlisted for SHRC chairmans post

The meeting to decide a name for the post of Chairman of State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) will be held on September 12.

The state government is in a dicey situation as eligible candidates are not enthusiastic for the post.

The post has been lying vacant after Justice S R Nayak completed his five year term. Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar had convened two meetings with the opposition leaders, Home Minister, Speaker and Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council to finalise the name but failed to arrive at any decision as there were no takers for the post.

The state government had reportedly shortlisted several names, including former Supreme Court Judges Justice R Raveendran,  Cyriac Joseph and others. Both have reportedly not shown any inclination to accept the offer.

“While the state government is finding difficulties in short listing the names to head the SHRC, there are over 150 aspirants interested for the two posts of members of SHRC which has been lying vacant since last month,” an official said.

According to SHRC Act 1993, a state may constitute a Human Rights Commission which shall consist of a chairperson who has been a Chief Justice of a High Court, one member who is  or has been a judge of a HC or district judge in the state with a minimum of seven years of experience and another to be appointed from among persons having  practical experience in matters related to human rights.
