More than 300 sanitation workers within Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur Municipal Corporation are actively involved in the daily cleaning tasks, which include the removal of accumulated waste and the application of disinfectant sprays. These workers work tirelessly for the betterment of society and keep the streets and homes hygienic and pest-free. Sanitation workers are one of the pillars of society and yet they are certainly not the best-paid lot. Recently, a private organisation in Thanjavur took it upon themselves to show a bit of appreciation to the sanitation workers of the city.

A project titled Sutta Biryanium Podum has been initiated by a private organisation in Thanjavur to show appreciation for sanitation workers. Initially, a comprehensive non-vegetarian meal consisting of biryani was provided to the sanitation workers operating in Ward 50/51 of Thanjavur Corporation.

Subsequently, in the following phase, 130 employees, including those from various roles such as 4th Division Cleanliness Workers, Drivers, Assistants, Animators, Dengue Abatement Workers, and Overhead Reservoir Operators, working in Wards 16/17/23/24/25 of Thanjavur Corporation, were served a lunch comprising high-quality non-vegetarian dishes along with eggs and ice cream. Previously, the cleanliness workers attending the event were greeted with a traditional reception including betel leaves, betel nuts, turmeric, sandalwood paste, vermilion and a sacred thread.

Two years back, sanitation workers in Thanjavur were assured of 1,000 houses with full facilities by the civic body by turning a 28-acre garbage dumping yard into housing grounds for them. Over the past 20 years, trash gathered from homes every day has been dumped in the waste dumping yard at Jabamalaipuram, close to Srinivasapuram in Thanjavur. The garbage is turned into bio-compost, which is then sold to nearby farmers. The process of clearing the garbage dump and construction of the housing is still underway.
