Bengaluru: The tragic death of three labourers, who died of asphyxia inside a manhole in Bengaluru's CV Raman Nagar on Tuesday, has once again brought to the fore the scourge of manual scavenging which is banned in India.
The labourers belonged to a private construction firm which had got a contract from Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to lay sewage pipes.
The private company was told to repair one of the overflowing manhole. The contractor broke the law and asked his labourers to enter the manhole.
Tushar Girinath, Chairman, BWSSB, said, "These drain contains toxic gases like Methane and has zero Oxygen. They are jetting machines that were supposed to be used, but the contractor didn't take any precaution. An internal enquiry will be carried out soon."
