New Delhi: A mega troupe of 1,730 guitarists from the Northeast broke the Guinness Book world record of the biggest guitar ensemble by performing at a gala concert in Shillong on Friday night. The two judges nominated by the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed the feat.
All roads of the hill town led to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Friday evening where the mega troupe of guitarists performed Bob Dylan's classic Knocking on Heavens Door in unison in an attempt to page themselves in the record books.
The strumming session, titled Rhythms of Meghalaya, broke the earlier world record set by 1,721 guitarist from Kansas City, USA, who had performed the rock classic Smoke on the Water on June 4 this year.
"We want the world to change its perception towards the Northeast. The Northeast is not just all about insurgency and negative things. Positive things also happen here. We are for everybody," Meghalaya Education Minister and chairman of Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) RG Lyngdoh said.
"We want to focus more on the positive vibrations of the region," he said.
The guitar ensemble that featured several celebrity guitarists also kicked off a 10-day-long Autumn Festival in Shillong. Many guitarists from Nagaland, Assam and Manipur participated in the event.
