VELLORE: VIT University is set to conduct its eighth edition of the VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) on April 21 to admit students to the BTech degree courses. VIT Chancellor G Viswanathan said that as many as 1,50,048 students (1,19,895 of them boys) have been registered for the entrance examination to be conducted at 238 centres in 112 cities across the country. “Fulfilling the demands of students from the Gulf countries this year we have set up centres in Dubai and Kuwait,” he said. Andhra Pradesh tops with 24,881 students aspiring to take the VITEEE, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 24,034 and Bihar, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu with 18,692, 11,296 and 10,005 respectively. As many as 11,129 students will appear for the examination across 15 centres in Delhi. On the local front, 2,244 students will appear in Vellore and 4,530 in Chennai.The results of the VITEEE will be announced on May 4 on the university website www.vit.ac.in, and on www.schools9.com,    www.globalinfowings.com, www.indiaresults.com, www.minglebox.com    and www.shiksha.com.Counselling for the first batch of the top 5,000 candidates will begin on May 14, followed by candidates ranking from 5,001 to 9,000 on May 15, from 9,001 to 12,000 on May 16, from 12,001 to 15,000 on May 17, from 15,001 to 18,000 on May 18 and the final batch of 18,001 to 20,000 on May 19.Viswanathan said high scoring students from poor economic backgrounds will be supported under the VIT-IGNITE scholarship scheme. One hundred per cent tuition fee waiver is available for the top three higher secondary exam rank holders in each state while the top 50 candidates of the VITEEE will get 75 per cent tuition fee waiver and those ranked 51-100 will get 50 per cent waiver.Toppers in government schools from each rural backward district in Tamil Nadu who appear for the VITEEE and secure top marks will be awarded 100 per cent tuition fee waiver and full exemption for hostel and mess fees under the Support The Advancement of Rural Students (STARS) scheme.
