Can AI Overviews be disabled?
AI Overviews are integrated into Search and can't be turned off. While Google's generative AI search used to be an opt-in feature, Google has since rolled out AI Overviews to all users. There is no option to disable the feature entirely, but you can still see the traditional link-filled search results page by switching to the new "Web" results tab. Or, if you're using a computer, you can use a free Chrome extension called Hide Google AI Overviews to disable generative AI entirely.
Hiding AI with the Web Tab
Use the new Web tab at the top of the search results page. After running your search, tap the Web tab at the top of the results page to hide the AI summary and see a traditional list of links to websites that match your query. In the Google mobile app, or when using Google in the web browser on your Android, iPhone, or iPad, tap the Web tab at the top of the search results page. If you don't see it, swipe left on the tabs below the search bar until it appears. On a computer, click the ⋮ More tab above the search results, then click Web.
Blocking AI with a Chrome Extension
Install the Hide Google AI Overviews extension for Chrome. If you don't want to switch to the Web tab every time you search (and you're using a computer), use this browser extension to automatically remove AI-generated summaries from Google search results. Hide Google AI Overviews works on Chrome, Edge, and all Chromium-based web browsers. To install: Go to the Hide Google AI Overviews page on the Chrome Web Store. Click Add to Chrome. Click Add extension.
