Former India captain and current Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey has termed PR Sreejesh as the ‘God of Indian Hockey’, adding that the goalkeeper could extend his career even after the Olympic Games. The 36-year-old had earlier confirmed that he would hang up his boots following the conclusion of the Paris Olympics 2024. However, his majestic performance in the semi-finals against Great Britain showed that there was enough gas left in the tank.

The Indian hockey team on Sunday defeated Great Britain 4-2 in the shootout to enter the semi-finals in the Paris Olympics 2024. Despite playing a significant part of the game with 10 men, the Harmanpreet Singh-led side ended up as the winners on Sunday at the Yves Du Manoir Stadium.
Sreejesh stole the show with his exceptional keeping abilities. In fact, he made 11 saves to help India crush the Brits in a crucial game. Impressed with Sreejesh’s heroics, Tirkey said the goalkeeper saved the game.
“Look, a new development in the Indian hockey team can be seen now. In recent versions, we have seen that our defense, especially the first runner, is doing a great job. They block the first runner like tigers. Today, Amit Rohidas, you might have seen in one or two short corners, blocked like this. However, Amit Rohidas received a red card and was sent out, but the team’s performance remained outstanding,” Tirkey told India Today.
“The important thing is that Sreejesh. Sreejesh is the god of Indian hockey. He has made a lot of saves in the past, and he saved the match today and helped us reach the semi-finals. Sreejesh’s hard work is evident,” Tirkey was quoted as saying to India Today.

Tirkey further revealed that Hockey India wants Sreejesh to continue playing but the latter has made up his mind.
“We want him to continue playing, but Sreejesh himself has already retired. We want Sreejesh to keep playing. But we hope he will continue to contribute in the future, and we get better players. Indian hockey has high hopes for him,” he concluded.
