Everton seem to have remained adamant about not selling Jarrad Branthwaite during this summer transfer window. Manchester United have been desperate to sign the young defender. They submitted an initial bid of £35 million plus £10 million in add-ons last month. Everton immediately rejected the offer. Manchester United, reportedly, then increased the total amount to £50 million, including performance-related add-ons. According to the Guardian, the second offer from the Red Devils has also been turned down by Everton, who have set a value of around £70m for Branthwaite. The England international’s current contract with Everton is scheduled to expire in 2027.
Branthwaite was one of the top-performing defenders in the Premier League last season. He played his first match for the England senior team in the first week of June, featuring in a pre-Euro friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina. The youngster, however, failed to find a place in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the ongoing European Championship.
Manchester United are keen on roping in a centre-back, who can fill the void created by Raphael Varane’s departure. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has already shortlisted his targets and Branthwaite is a front-runner in the race. Everton, who signed him for £1 million from EFL League Two side Carlisle in January 2020, do not want to release their prized asset so early, as per ESPN.
Kevin Thelwell, Everton’s director of football, earlier revealed that the club would have to sell a few players this summer to battle financial problems. Amadou Onana, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Michael Keane and Neal Maupay all have been put on sale to raise funds. Everton, however, have not received any viable offer for these players.
Manchester United are still hoping to secure the signing of Branthwaite. According to a report by The Times, the Old Trafford officials will come up with the third bid, which can be closer to Everton’s asking price. By then, Manchester United will look to complete the transfer of Matthijs de Ligt. Bayern Munich have reportedly demanded £42 million for the Dutch defender. De Ligt played under Ten Hag at his former club Ajax before joining Juventus in 2019.
