Real Madrid have beaten off competition from rivals Barcelona to land 11-year-old American Joshua Pynadath.

Los Altos Hills, California: An 11-year-old child prodigy from the USA has been signed up by Spanish football giants Real Madrid, beating off competition from rivals Barcelona. Joshua Pynadath, of Lost Altos Hills in California was invited for trials after his club, De Anza Force Soccer Club, sent a video to Real.

The schoolboy will become the first American to join the Real Madrid academy programme. Earlier this year, young Pynadath traveled to Madrid to attend a trial. He will now spend a year in the academy, starting in late August, with Real's Alevin A team.

"I was blown away when I got the official news from Real Madrid," Pynadath told losaltosonline.com. "They told me that I was the first American that they have ever accepted into their academy. I told them that I would set a good example."
