The education portal is known as Swayam, and it was developed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Central Government. According to the reports, 1185 courses are offered on this portal from 203 institutes. The Swayam portal was officially launched in 2017 by the central government. Courses starting from the 9th class to post-graduation are provided free of cost on this portal. When a candidate completes a course, the NTA or the National Testing Agency conducts examinations for around 390 courses. After the candidates qualify for the examinations, they are given certificates.
The nodal agencies for this portal are the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), University Grants Commission (UGC), Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) for undergraduate courses, and IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National University) for school students. For studies in management, it is the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, and for the teacher training program, it is the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR).
Reports further stated that around 3.9 crore candidates have already registered on this portal, while 39.9 lakh students have registered for examinations through it. Around 25.2 candidates have acquired their certificates through this portal after completing various courses.
In 2020, during the pandemic, there were reports citing an increase in the registration of candidates on the portal. As per the reports, an increase of 647 per cent was seen in 2019, while in 2021, an increase of 181 per cent was reported. The year 2022 saw an increase of 28 per cent, and last year, which was 2023, an increase of 204 per cent was reported.
The candidates can register on the official link of the Swayam Portal. The registered candidates can learn through the content available on the portal, which includes online video lectures, reading material, etc. While the self-assessment tests and discussions are conducted online.
