More than 160 casualties have been reported after heavy rains lash TN. Govt calls emergency meet.

New Delhi: Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu because of low pressure over the Bay of Bengal have brought normal life to a standstill.

More than 160 people have been reported dead in rain-related incidents - 45 thousand people have been evacuated from along the coast. Chennai,Nagapattinam and Trichy have been the worst affected.

Schools and colleges have been closed and the government has called an emergency cabinet meet to assess the situation.

Heavy rainfall forecast in parts of AP

Districts in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions are likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next two days under the influence of a low-pressure area

formed in the Bay of Bengal, the Met department said on Monday.

The department issued a heavy rainfall warning till the morning of December 8 and forecast isolated heavy rain in the districts of Prakasam and Nellore of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Chittoor of Rayalaseema.

The northeast monsoon has been vigorous over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh resulting in rainfall yesterday in several areas, the department said.

Meanwhile, the minimum (night) temperatures fell significantly at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, it added.
