Yashasvi Jaiswal Explains How Gautam Gambhir Helps Players Produce Their Natural Game
According to Yashasvi Jaiswal, India's new head coach Gautam Gambhir backs players to the hilt, and it helps the players produce their natural game.

Star Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has made a big name for himself in international cricket since making his India debut last year against the West Indies, was full of praise for India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and has revealed how the former Indian opener helps players produce their natural game. According to the 22-year-old left-handed batter, who scored 171 runs in his maiden Test inning, Gambhir backs players to the hilt, something that helps the players produce their natural game.

“Yes, I have spoken with him during the Sri Lanka series. He really backed us, saying just go out and play freely and enjoy the game, and we will be with you. It gives us a lot of confidence and helps us to play fearlessly,” Jaiswal was quoted as saying by PTI.

Gambhir was appointed as India’s head coach on July 9, 2024, after Rahul Dravid’s tenure came to an end in June 2024. In his first assignment as head coach, India whitewashed Sri Lanka in a T20I series but suffered a shocking defeat against Charith Asalanka’s men in the three-match ODI series played in Colombo.

Jaiswal, who will be a key player for India in the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh later this month, also spoke highly about his opening partner and Indian captain Rohit Sharma and said it’s an incredible experience to go out and bat with him. According to Jaiswal, there are a lot of things he has learnt from the 37-year-old right-handed batter.

“It is an incredible experience whenever I go out and bat with him. He has shared his experiences with me. I think the way he controls the game and understands the wicket, it is spot on, and there are a lot of things (to learn from him),” Jaiswal said.

“You can learn from him things like adjusting your batting to seaming or turning tracks or changing your batting when a wicket or two fall,” he added.

The Mumbai-based batter, who holds the record of being the fastest Indian to score 1000 runs in Tests, said that he has become a lot more aware about his own game in the last 12 months or so.

“Now, I can see a lot of scenarios and shift my game accordingly for the team and read the situations. I think these are very important for me in the last one year. When I was playing domestic cricket, I was not aware of many things. But since I started playing international cricket, the communication and the reading of the game have improved a lot. I just want to keep learning,” he added.
