Royal Challengers Bengaluru legend and former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik feels 23-year-old Indian batter Abhishek Sharma is a future superstar. Karthik, who announced his retirement from cricket after IPL 2024, was very impressed by Sharma’s knock of 100 runs from 47 balls in his second T20I for India against Zimbabwe on July 7 and said that the Amritsar-born cricketer has a very bright future with the Indian team.
Abhishek took the IPL 2024 by storm and scored 484 runs with a strike rate of 204.21 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Due to his aggressive batting at the top, he earned a place in the Indian team for the five-match series against Zimbabwe earlier this month.
After getting out for a four-ball duck on his debut, Abhishek opened his account with a six on the first ball of the second match played in Harare and went on to become the quickest batter (two innings) to score a century for Men in Blue in T20Is. He faced a total of 47 balls, and with the help of seven fours and eight sixes, he scored 100 runs.
During a Cricbuzz show, when Karthik was asked about Sharma’s batting, he said, “I think he is a future superstar. The 100 that he got… we all know the skill that he possesses, but to come out in international cricket and do it the same way that you have done in the IPL is what sets him apart, and I really enjoyed watching that knock. Terrific player. I do think he has a very good future for Indian cricket.”
Despite his impressive outings with the bat in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, Abhishek failed to keep his place in the T20I team announced for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. The decision to drop Abhishek was questioned by many former greats and experts of the game.
India will face Sri Lanka in the three-match T20I series starting on July 27 under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. All three matches of the bilateral series between the two sides are scheduled to take place at Pallekele International Stadium.
