The Sunil Gavaskar-Virat Kohli saga had taken social media by storm and Kohli’s latest interview had some subtle digs about the whole fiasco which reignited the flames.
In the latest interview with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kohli once again spoke about the highly contentious matter. The video begins with Kohli being asked about a friend of his. “See Virat I want to talk about a friend of yours. Not my friend, but your friend. He said a lot of nice things about you…Sunil”, the host said.
This line was a clever play of words with the Gavaskar strike-rate issue along with Sunil Chhetri’s recent announcement of his retirement from international football. The cricketer-turned-commentator had criticised Kohli’s strike rate. The question seemed to catch Kohli off-guard who responded with a smile by asking, “Who?” The host then revealed that the person he was talking about was Sunil Chhetri which left the duo in splits.

For the unversed, Virat Kohli had recently responded to ‘outside noise’ where several cricket pundits and fans were critical of the Indian batter’s strike rates. It all started after Kohli, during a post-match presentation after the Gujarat Titans game where Royal Challengers Bengaluru chased down the target of more than 200 in 16 overs. Kohli had scored a 44-ball 70 in that game.
Later, Kohli went on a rant regarding the discussions over his strike rate and he said, “I am not sure if you have not been in that situation yourself, to sit and speak about the game from the box; I don’t think it’s the same thing, so for me, it’s just about doing my job, people can talk about ideas for the game, but for me, it’s kind of a muscle memory now”.

The comment did not go down well with Sunil Gavaskar who seemed to be quite disappointed with the host broadcasters repeating one particular statement issued by Virat Kohli. During a post-match show, Gavaskar fired back by saying,” All these guys talk about, ‘Oh, we don’t care about outside noise’.
Then why are you replying to any outside noise or whatever it is? We all played a bit of cricket, not a lot of cricket. We don’t have agendas. We speak about what we see. We don’t necessarily have any likes and dislikes. Even if we have likes and dislikes, we actually speak on what is happening”.
