Samoa Batter Breaks Yuvraj Singh's T20I Record, Smashes 39 Runs in an Over vs Vanuatu
39 runs, record for most runs from one over of a men's T20I contest, were conceded from one over in the match between Samoa and Vanuatu.

Samoa’s Darius Visser made history on Tuesday as he broke Yuvraj Singh’s record for the most runs scored in an over of a men’s T20I contest.

The wicket-keeper batter smashed 39 runs, including six sixes and was helped with three no-balls from Vanuatu seamer Nalin Nipiko at Garden Oval No.2 in Apia, Samoa during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional East Asia-Pacific Qualifier A match.

The previous record for the most runs in a T20I over was 36, with India’s Yuvraj Singh, West Indies’ Kieron Pollard and Nepal all-rounder Dipendra Singh Airee all having struck six sixes in an over.

Yuvraj hit England’s Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over in a 2007 T20 World Cup match, Pollard meted out the same treatment to Sri Lanka’s Akila Dananjaya in 2021, with Airee becoming the third batsman to achieve the feat in April.

The record in one-day internationals is 36, scored by South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs and U.S. batsman Jaskaran Malhotra.

Visser smashed sixes from the first three deliveries of Nipiko’s over and then cleared the boundary from the fourth legal delivery of the over to help bring up the hundred for his country.

A dot ball from the fifth ball of the over did little to dampen Visser’s spirits as the 28-year-old smashed a six from the third no-ball of the over and finished the over with another almighty blow to ensure he broke the record and became the first player from Samoa to score a century in international cricket.

Visser finished his innings with a total of 14 sixes – four adrift of the most hit by one batter in a men’s T20I – and his individual score of 132 from just 62 deliveries was enough to ensure Samoa registered their second victory at the event and kept their hopes up of qualifying for the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2026.

Visser, who also took the wicket of Vanuatu batter Ronald Tari, powered Samoa to a total of 174, which they were able to defend to claim their second victory in the East Asia-Pacific qualifying tournament.
