One step closer and away from eternal glory. India has cruised to the finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup in some dominant fashion, clinching 6 wins in an undefeated campaign. And at the helm of it all has been skipper Rohit Sharma, who was praised by Former India cricketer Surinder Khanna who believes that Team India will win the World Cup under the ‘cool skipper’.
In an exclusive talk with IANS, Khanna expounded on India’s journey at the World Cup so far, reinstating his faith in skipper Rohit Sharma to get the job done and clinch India’s first ICC trophy since 2013.
“It is really impressive that our team reached the final. The way they played against England – defending champions – in the semis was phenomenal. So, I am very happy for the team and also for South Africa,” stated Khanna.
Despite India’s blazing form, one cannot dismiss the Proteas, who themselves have put up an undefeated campaign so far as well. And Khanna stated that India has to be aware of the same, and not underestimate their opposition.
“You can’t sit on the past laurels. India did great so far. They are a good side. But South Africa is unbeaten as well. They have good bowlers with them. You can’t take your opponents lightly,” cautioned Khanna.
“Everyone was supporting Afghanistan and the way Proteas bowlers finished the Rashid Khan-led side in 56, showed that South Africa can be dangerous. Being an Indian, I want India to win but our opponent is tough too.”
But, no matter the opposition, India can stand on the new ‘cool’ captain Rohit Sharma to get the job done for them.
Rohit, who himself has found his form in the past two matches with the bat, scoring a blistering 92 against Australia and 57 against England in the semi-final, will be expected to lead the way for them once again to seal the deal.
“Rohit is cool. His records speak about his captaincy. The way he handles the team is really impressive. Some players are not in form but he believes that ‘form is temporary, and class is permanent’, which is very good. And that is why he is the Captain of all three formats. It will be really great if India wins the World Cup under him,” exclaimed Khanna.
