Many high-profile Indian cricketers were in action on Thursday (September 5) during the first round matches of Duleep Trophy 2024, but apart from a couple of players, the majority of them produced a flop day on Day 1 of the premier domestic tournament, which is being played across two venues in Anantapur and Bengaluru.
Indian players like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar, and Sarfaraz Khan failed to score big runs with the bat, and Kuldeep Yadav was not able to take any wicket despite bowling 14 overs.
Here’s a look at how Indian Test players and hopefuls performed on Day 1 of the Duleep Trophy 2024:
Yashasvi Jaiswal: Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings for India B in the match against India A at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and scored 30 runs. During his stay at the crease, the 22-year-old left-handed batter faced a total of 59 balls and hammered six boundaries.
Sarfaraz Khan: Sarfaraz came out to bat at No. 4 for India B, but unlike his younger brother Musheer, who scored an unbeaten century, Sarfaraz was unable to do much and was sent back to the dugout by Avesh Khan for nine runs from 35 balls.
Rishabh Pant: In his first red-ball match since life-threatening road accident on December 30, 2022, Pant scored seven runs from 10 balls for India B. He was caught by Shubman Gill off Akash Deep’s bowling.

Devdutt Padikkal: Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal, who made his Test debut against England in Dharamsala on March 7, 2024, and scored 65 runs in the first innings, failed to open his account for India D against India C. He was sent to the pavilion for a four-ball duck by Vijaykumar Vyshak.
KS Bharat: Andhra wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat, who has played in five Tests for India so far, was only able to score 13 runs from 42 balls for India D.
Axar Patel: Spin bowling all-rounder Axar Patel was the top performer of Day 1 of Duleep Trophy 2024. The Gujarat-based cricketer top-scored for India D by amassing a total of 86 runs from 118 balls with the help of six fours and six sixes and then picked up two wickets as well for just 16 runs in six overs.
Ruturaj Gaikwad: India C captain Ruturaj Gaikwad opened the innings but was only able to score five runs from 19 balls. He was dismissed by India D’s Delhi-based pacer, Harshit Rana.
Rajat Patidar: Rajat Patidar, who has played in three Tests for India against England in February 2024, scored 13 runs from 30 balls for India C against India D. He was clean bowled by Axar Patel.
Washington Sundar: Tamil Nadu spinner Washington Sundar, who last played a red-ball match for India in 2021, failed to open his account despite facing 13 balls in the first match of Duleep Trophy 2024 for India B.
