Over 13 years ago today, May 28, the Chennai Super Kings beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Bengaluru) to win their second Indian Premier League (IPL) crown. One of the most dominant teams in IPL history, Chennai have made the finals of the T20 extravaganza 10 times. They appeared in four straight finals from 2010 to 2013, winning the tournament twice in that period.

Their reign began with a 22-run victory over the Mumbai Indians in 2010 before securing back-to-back trophies in a one-sided game against Bengaluru the next year. They thrashed the Daniel Vettori-led side by 58 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on the big occasion.

Today let’s relive the epic clash that saw MS Dhoni and company add a second consecutive trophy to their cabinet.

Batting first on their turf, the Chennai Super Kings ensured to make their home advantage count by putting up a mammoth total. They won the toss and batted first to put up 205 runs at a loss of five wickets.

The majority chunk of the total was scored by the team’s openers Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay. The duo stitched together a formidable partnership to add 159 runs in 14.5 overs before losing a wicket.

Hussey’s knock was a 45-ball 63 that included three fours and as many sixes. Whereas, Vijay smashed four boundaries and six maximums to amass 95 runs in 52 deliveries. MS Dhoni made his appearance towards the end, putting up a valuable 22-run knock.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Bengaluru) had a daunting task ahead if they were to win their first-ever IPL title.

The team made it to the final off some phenomenal performances from Chris Gayle but the West Indies star was dismissed in the first over of the chase by Ravichandran Ashwin.

The early setback put the Royal Challengers on the back foot for the rest of the chase. AB de Villiers’ dismissal at 18 only made matters worse for the men in red and gold.

Virat Kohli was the next batter to fall who put up 35 runs in 32 deliveries. Saurabh Tiwary’s 34-ball 42 was the highest score for Bengaluru in the second innings.

The Daniel Vettori-led side kept losing wickets in frequent intervals to finish at 147/8 after 20 overs.

Chennai Super Kings spinners shone on the slow pitch, with Ravichandran Ashwin dismissing three batters. The Indian spinner ended the game with figures of 3-16. However, it was Murali Vijay who took home the Player of the Match award for his 95-run knock.
