Michael Vaughan on Why He Would Pick Joe Root Over Virat Kohli in Tests: 'Look at His Record in India'
Michael Vaughan seems to prefer Joe Root over Virat Kohli even in Indian conditions. A bizarre take considering both their records in Indian conditions.

The former England captain, Michael Vaughan is at it again with the legendary wicketkeeper-batter, Adam Gilchrist, debating who they would pick between Virat Kohli and Joe Root.

Both Kohli and Root have been part of their national teams for 16 and 12 years respectively. While the former has gone on to showcase his class across all three formats, the latter seems to double down on playing Test cricket after his World Cup win in 2019.

In the Club Praire Fire podcast on YouTube, the duo of Gilchrist and Vaughan were asked to take their picks between the two iconic batters. The pair opted for Kohli in the white-ball formats. The former Australian international recognised that Root’s numbers have been superior in the recent past for Test cricket.

Then the debate went down to playing in different conditions across the globe. Both men agreed that Kohli would be the better man should it be in Australian conditions. But Vaughan sees that Root is better in other countries, including Kohli’s home nation, India.

Vaughan had a simple reason for this take. “Look at Joe Root’s record in India”, he said.

In India, Kohli has had much more experience playing as many as 50 Tests while racking up 4144 runs at an average of 60.05 and a high score of an unbeaten 254. Root on the other hand has 1272 runs in the 15 Tests he played at an average of 45.42.

Kohli will likely make his return to Test cricket since January 2024 as the Indian team take on Bangladesh in the two-match Test series at home with Chennai and Kanpur playing as hosts for the World Test Championship games.

The Indian batting icon will be eager to get back to form in whites as the games will lead up to the series of the summer where India will tour Australia to defend the Border-Gavaskar title.
