Team India set South Africa a target of 177 runs to win the summit clash of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday.

The men in blue scripted history as the total of 176 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs was the highest score posted in a T20 WC final.

With the feat, India went past the score of Australia, who held the record for the highest total in a T20WC championship clash when they made 173 runs against New Zealand in the year 2021.

The Kiwis’ unsuccessful chase (172/4) of the target on that day stands as the third-highest score in a championship clash. West Indies’ total of 161/6 against England in 2016 stands fourth on the list, followed by India’s 157 runs total against Pakistan in the inaugural edition of the tournament.

India opted to bat after winning the coin toss on Saturday as skipper Rohit Sharma opened the innings with Virat Kohli, who got the men in blue off to a quick start with a couple of boundaries off Marco Jansen in the first over.

However, the Proteas’ fortunes turned in the second over for the better as Keshav Maharaj claimed a double-wicket over with the dismissals of Rohit and Rishabh Pant for 9 runs and a duck respectively.

Suryakumar Yadav also fell cheaply as he was dismissed for 3 runs off just 4 deliveries, before Axar Patel walked out to steady the innings as he notched up a solid 72-run stand with Kohli.

Axar’s knock proved crucial as his 47 runs off 31 balls stabilised the ship before he was caught short of the crease by Quinton de Kock.

Kohli and Shivam Dube added 57 runs for the fifth wicket as the former brought up his half-century. Kohli made 76 runs off 59 deliveries before falling to Kagiso Rabada.

Dube added 27 runs before walking back to the hut, and Ravindra Jadeja made a runs-a-ball- 2 runs before being dismissed by Anrich Nortje in the final ball of the innings as Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten at 5.
