The Impact Player rule has certainly caused some rifts within the cricketing community and yet another stance on the same was issued today by none other than Indian skipper Rohit Sharma himself, who stated his dislike and disdain for the same.
Introduced as yet another tweaked rendition of the ‘Super Sub’ rule that we cricket fans have witnessed in ODIs, the Impact Player rule in the IPL has made for quite some talk around cricketing circles. And a huge point of contention for those who are against the rule, has to do with the nullification of the effect and art of being an all-rounder.

Rohit, former skipper of the Mumbai Indians, expounded his thoughts on the same, as he believed that the trade-off being made in the name of making the game a tad bit more entertaining for consumers, would inherently also lead to the hindrance of the growth of the sport.
“I don’t know what you can do about it, but I’m not a fan of it, honestly speaking,” stated Rohit in conversation with Micheal Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.
“I genuinely feel that it is going to hold it back because eventually cricket is played by eleven players, not twelve players.”
The diminishing value of all-rounders is a pressing issue, that Rohit seems to be concerned about. There now exists a vacuum within which certain niche role players are able to thrive. In the larger picture, this spells trouble for the future of the national team, as players become more one-dimensional to suit their needs and wants and discredit the value of work ethic.
When time comes to represent at the international level, a lack of multi-discipline players who are well-rounded in their skillsets would prove to be a dire issue, which is also along the lines of what Rohit seems to believe in.
It is entertaining because, you know, there are obviously twelve players for you to select from and whoever that impact player is, you can, you can see how the game is going and change it later depending on what you need, what the pitch is behaving,” stated Rohit.
“You are taking out so much from the game just to make it a little more entertaining for the people around. But if you look genuinely at just the cricketing aspect of it, I feel that guys like Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube are not getting to bowl, which for us is not a good thing.”
