England opener Zak Crawley survived a close call on the first day of the ongoing Dharamsala Test as the Indian team refrained from taking a DRS. At that moment, the visitors were at 101/2 and Joe Root had just arrived at the crease following the dismissal of Ollie Pope. Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav bowled a mystic delivery, which was going away from the batter’s leg stump. Crawley tried to defend it but completely misjudged the line.

Sarfaraz Khan, who was the short-leg fielder, looked confident that the ball got the outside edge of Crawley’s bat. The ball first deflected off wicketkeeper Dhurv Jurel’s gloves before Sarfaraz pulled off a stunning dive to complete the catch. As soon as the ball found his clasp, Sarfaraz raised a huge appeal but the on-field umpire gave not-out.

Some members of the Indian side including captain Rohit Sharma gathered to discuss the incident. Dhruv Jurel, who perhaps also had a clear view, was not sure about the edge. He was seen nodding his head in a negative gesture while Sarfaraz kept urging his skipper to take the DRS. Rohit ultimately went with Dhruv’s assessment and decided not to challenge the initial decision.
In the next over when Jasprit Bumrah came in to bowl, a replay popped up on the screen. The ultra-edge confirmed that the ball had taken a nick off Zak Crawley’s bat before Sarfaraz Khan took the catch. The young India batter was evidently disappointed after seeing the replay on the giant screen. Rohit Sharma and the other players, who were involved in the discussion, reacted with a wry smile.

The decision of not taking the DRS turned out to be quite costly as Zak Crawly wrapped up the innings as the top scorer for England. The right-handed batter registered 79 runs off 108 runs when most of his teammates surrendered early in front of the Indian spinner duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav.
Riding on Crawley’s one-man show, England managed to produce 218 runs in the first innings. Kuldeep Yadav fetched a five-for while Ravi Ashwin showed his class in his 100th Test by claiming a four-wicket haul. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja picked the remaining wicket.
