Rohit Sharma will have the chance to equal a feat achieved by only a handful of Indian captain and then do something no skipper of the Indian men’s cricket team has ever achieved.
Mohammed Azharuddin (1992), Sachin Tendulkar (1996), Sourav Ganguly (2001), Rahul Dravid (2006-07), MS Dhoni (2010-11 and 2013-14) and Virat Kohli (2018-19 and 2021-22) won Test matches but none of them could win the elusive series in South Africa. Rohit, now has the chance to make history.
At the last 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit best would have emulated Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but could not. If he and his men manage to pull off a coup in this country, he would stand first among the equals.
So Rohit will have a job at hand and a win might just be the much-needed soothing balm required to heal the World Cup wounds even though the scars will remain.
Rohit took time out after the loss in the final and came back with a video statement on social media.
“I had no idea how to come back from this (loss in the World Cup final) the first few days…my family, my friends kept me going, kept things pretty light around me, which was quite helpful. It wasn’t easy to digest, but yeah, life moves on. You have to move on in life,” Rohit said in a video posted on social media.
“At times I thought we did everything we could from our side if someone asked me what went wrong because we won 10 games and in those 10 games, yes, we made mistakes. But those mistakes happen in every game. You cannot have a perfect game. You can have a near-perfect game but never a perfect game.”
“It was just pure love from the people that I met and it was wonderful to see that. So, you know, it gives you motivation to get back and start working again and look for another ultimate prize,” Rohit added.
Apart from Rohit, other senior Indian cricketers will also be on their last African Safari and be a part of team to conquest what no other team could on eight previous tours.
