Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is one of the important places that add beauty to Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. There is a lot of history related to this temple. Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam Temple is located in the middle of a huge artificial tank or pond. Do you know where the water comes into the pond? According to reports, this is the site where King Thirumalai Naicker excavated the soil to make bricks that he needed to build Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, his palace. As a result, the pit that resulted is today recognised as a tank. Its dimensions are almost the same as those of Meenakshi Amman Temple, measuring around 305 metres long by 290 metres broad. This is Tamil Nadu’s largest tank, and was built in 1645 AD.
Reports suggest that the water coming to the Teppakulam temple is from the Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu. The water comes from a small canal at the bottom of the Albert Victor Bridge, which is another important location in Madurai. From Vaigai Power Solutions in Avaniapuram, Madurai water comes to this canal through a tunnel; and through the bottom of the canal road, water comes to a small pond near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Girls’ High School, which is in the Madurai Mariamman Teppakulam area. From that small pond, water directly flows through four pipes in the Madurai Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam temple. At that time, they had designed a model to bring water from the Vaigai River to Teppakulam.
A few years ago, the corporation said that the pond would always be full due to the Smart City project. The surplus water stored in the Vaigai power dam is released to this clan from time to time, and the pond is filled.
