Filmmaker Mari Selvaraj is quite a popular director, known for his work in Dhanush starrer Karnan. His Tamil OTT series titled SOS- Straight Outta Sunnambu Kaalvai’ was recently released. The story of the series explores the struggles of two generations of hip-hop dance groups as they attempt to build a dance studio in Sunnambu Kaalvai. As per reports, the director is caught up in the controversies over his assistant director’s death.
Director Selvaraj’s assistant director, Marimuthu who hailed from South Street, Tirupuliangudi village near Srivaikundam, Tuticorin district, reportedly died of suffocation. The 30-year-old assistant director is survived by his wife Sheeba and a 5-year-old son, Samuel. The Srivaikundam Police, in the aftermath, have registered a case the investigation has also begun.
As per the reports, Marimuthu was going to make his debut as a director next year and was all set to write a story. The director is also reported to have a bad habit of smoking and used to smoke too many cigarettes in a day. There are speculations that he suffocated and died due to regular smoking. He complained of mild chest pain after which he was taken to the hospital. A few hours after being admitted to the hospital, Marimuthu passed away leaving everyone with a void in their hearts.
The Srivaikundam Police who are investigating his death are trying with all their might to find out the exact reason behind his death. Notably, the incident has caused a stir in the film industry.
Marimuthu made his debut in the entertainment industry with the film Karnan, directed by Mari Selvaraj. He worked as an assistant director in films including Mamannan and Vazai. On the other hand, Selvaraj entered the Tamil film industry in 2006. Though he wanted to be an actor in the beginning, he joined Ram as an assistant director and worked in three films Kattradhu Thamizh, Thanga Meenkal and Taramani. In 2018, he made his directorial debut with his first film Pariyerum Perumal. His second film Karnan starring Dhanush received widespread praise from the audience and critical acclaim.
