New Delhi: Uninor, whose 22 licences allotted under the 2G spectrum have been cancelled by the Supreme Court on Thursday, claimed that the company was treated unfairly. The company in a statement issued on Thursday said that Uninor had followed the due process during the allocation and was not going to stop its operations.
"We have been unfairly treated as we simply followed the government process we were asked to. We are shocked to see that Uninor is being penalised for faults the court has found in the government process. It is important to note that order does not stop our operations for now. We will study the order in detail and exercise all options available to ensure that Uninor continues to operate in India," said Uninor after the Supreme Court cancelled all 122 licences issued after January 10, 2008 under the 2G spectrum.
"We also expect the authorities to ensure that our 36 million customers, 17500 workforce and 22,000 partners are not unjustly affected," the company said.
While cancelling the licences the Supreme Court ruled that 85 out of the 122 licences were outside the eligibility criteria for allocation. The apex court said that the 122 licences for 2G spectrum were granted in arbitrary and unconstitutional manner.
The licences will be cancelled in four months from now and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) must go in for a fresh issue of licences during this period, the apex court observed.
A penalty of Rs 5 crore has been imposed on Uninor, Swan Telecom and Tata Telecom. A penalty of Rs 50 lakh has also been imposed on Loop, S-Tel, Allianz and Sistema Shyam.
The licences cancelled include 21 of Videocon, 22 of Uninor, nine of Idea, 21 of Loop, six of S-Tel, 21 of Sistema, three of Tata, 13 of Swan and two of Allianz.
The Supreme Court also asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to give status report on the investigation into the 2G scam to the Central Vigilance Commission.
