Mumbai: The BSE benchmark Sensex lost nearly 54 points in opening trade on Tuesday on fresh selling by funds and retail investors amid a subdued trend on other Asian bourses.

The 30-share barometer, which gained 51.68 points in the previous session, fell by 53.93 points, or 0.28 per cent, to 18,760.55 within the first few minutes of trade, with realty, banking, capital goods, oil and gas and metal stocks coming

under pressure.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index declined by 20.55 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 5,629.95.

Brokers attributed the downslide on the bourses to a fresh round of selling, mostly of a profit-booking nature, by funds and retail investors in tandem with a weakening trend on other Asian bourses.

In other markets in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was trading 0.08 per cent lower, while Japan's Nikkei remained almost flat in morning trade on Tuesday. The US markets remained closed on Monday on account of 'Independence Day'.
