Bajaj Auto to launch small, cheap car
Bajaj Auto Limited may launch a low-cost car if Tata's Rs 1 lakh car affects the two-wheeler market in the country.

New Delhi: Bajaj Auto Limited Chairman Rahul Bajaj said on Saturday that if Tata's Rs one lakh car affects the two-wheeler market in the country, then his company would also manufacture a low-cost car.

"The JP power study says that it (Tata's one lakh car) will affect the two-wheeler market. If that happens then we would also manufacture cars for the market," Bajaj who attended the eighth annual convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indore told PTI.

The much-touted "people's car" from the stable of Tata Motors could create a major dent in the two-wheelers’ sales with its lucrative price tag.

Tata Motors’ Ltd will fit its planned small car with a 600cc engine in the rear and the four-door car will be designed to seat 4 or 5 people. Priced at only Rs 1 lakh, it may space out two wheelers and top-end bikes completely.

Bajaj who is in the midst of a family feud over ownership issues, said that the company will continue with its plans despite the legal row. Referring to the reports of dispute in the Bajaj family, he said, the question should be referred to both his sons as they are concerned with it.

On the issue of SEZ policy, Bajaj, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP said, he was in favour of it provided they are not located near cities like Mumbai and Delhi where there is land shortage.

He said the country needs growth but adequate compensations should be given to those whose land is acquired for the purpose.
