'50 powerful people who are helping transform India into an economic power'.

New Delhi: Industry tycoons Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal; filmstars Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikant, Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai and sportspersons Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar have been named as ‘Top 50 Movers and Shakers of Contemporary India’ by the US-based BusinessWeek magazine as India celebrates the 60th anniversary of her Independence.

The magazine said as the world marvels at India's rapid economic ascendancy, it is this elite group of business, political and cultural leaders which is helping transform India into a 21st Century economic power in Asia and beyond, often less noticed.

The magazine said the individuals that made up BusinessWeek's India's 50 Most Powerful People roster will be the ones who will be playing leading roles as India faces the plenty of challenges ahead.

"Odds are good that India's economic and social dynamism (it is home to the youngest population in the world) will be worth watching closely in the years ahead," the magazine said.

The names featured on the list of 50 included Commerce Minister Kamal Nath, Aviation Minister Praful Patel, UP Chief Minister Mayawati, Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan, Naveen Patnaik, but none of Sonia Gandhi, Dr Manmohan Singh, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani or Prakash Karat figure in it.

Similarly among the business leaders, the list includes Ratan Tata, Sunil Bharti Mittal, KV Kamath, Deepak Parekh, Mukesh Ambani and others but it leaves out the likes of NR Narayana Murthy, Azim Premji or Tata Consultancy Services' S Ramadorai.

"It's not to suggest that they are not interesting executives, but there's more to India than just outsourcing. Similarly, you won't find Arcelor Mittal's Lakshmi Mittal on the list, despite his fame in the global steel industry. He's a British citizen and has only recently started looking at investing in India," the magazine declares.

The list has a large dose of Bollywood, sportspeople and even fashion designers. But people from other areas of the cultural sphere — like music, literature etc — are missing.

In an article titles ‘Behind the Miracle: India's Mighty Movers’, the magazine, quoting a study by the McKinsey Global Institute, says that India is expected to emerge as the world's fifth-biggest consumer market by 2025 as incomes and living standards improve.
