Ace Indian shuttler HS Prannoy is set to make his maiden appearance at the Summer Olympics this year in Paris. He has a great chance to overcome the group stage in his debut campaign.
Prannoy has been pooled in Group K alongside Vietnam’s Le Duo Phat and Germany’s Fabian Roth. The Delhi-born athlete started playing badminton at the age of 10, under the guidance of his father Sunil Kumar, who had won the All India Air Force Badminton Championship.
Prannoy later joined the academy of national coach Pullela Gopichand for professional training. He competed in several national tournaments before winning silver at the Youth Olympics in 2010.
A year later, he secured his first-ever international medal in Bahrain. In 2014, he reached his first Grand Prix Gold final at the Vietnam Open and finished as the runner-up.
In the same year, Prannoy emerged victorious at the Indonesia Open. He claimed his second Grand Prix Gold title by beating Germany’s Marc Zwiebler at the Swiss Open 2016.
Next year, he became the first Indian shuttler to triumph at the US Open Badminton Championships. He won the gold medal in the mixed team event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. He clinched bronze in men’s singles at the Asian Badminton Championships later that year.
