Member of Parliament Rahul Shewale is urging the Shinde Government to rename the seven suburban railway stations in Mumbai, which date back to the colonial era.
Chief Minister Shinde has signaled his support for the proposal, indicating a move towards adopting names that resonate more with the city’s cultural heritage, as reported by Times Now.
In response to mounting demands from the people of Mumbai, Shewale’s proposal seeks to rename these stations to reflect their historical and cultural significance.
The proposed name changes are as follows:
- Curry Road to Lalbaug
- Marine Lines to Mumbadevi
- Sandhurst Road to Dongri
- Cotton Green to Kalachowki
- Charni Road to Girgaon
- Dockyard Road to Mazgaon
- King Circle to Tirthakar Parshivnath
These changes aim to resonate with local sentiments and reflect contemporary relevance. Additionally, the state government has suggested renaming Mumbai Central Railway Station to Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth Railway Station, pending central government approval.
Shewale emphasized the need to acknowledge India’s sovereignty and discard remnants of colonial influence. He highlighted the ongoing efforts by the central government to rename colonial-era landmarks nationwide.
“The state government’s preliminary approval, following the positive response from Mumbaikars, marks a significant progression,” Shewale stated, indicating that the proposal would be forwarded to the central government for final clearance.
