Elon Musk’s X has thrown its support behind a Canadian physician caught in legal disputes due to her controversial stance on covid policies during the pandemic’s peak. When Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill was slammed for her take on vaccines and lockdowns in 2021, she struck back, filing a $12-million libel suit to clear her name from what she described as “spurious defamation.”
A pre-trial procedural ruling against Dr. Gill led to a cost order of up to $1.2 million in October 2022. This decision and the cost order were both appealed, ultimately leading to a cost order of nearly $300K in February this year. Gill, an immunologist and pediatrician, says that she faced harassment and censorship after opposing Canadian and Ontario covid measures.

Free speech
Elon Musk’s X on Sunday pledged support to Dr Gill, with the platform covering the outstanding sum of her legal battle. Underlining free speech’s democratic essence, X News’ account statement stressed its commitment to protecting it. The platform, often derided by the American left, vouched for its dedication to fostering open debate, aiming for a censorship-free platform.
“Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill is a frontline physician in Ontario, Canada who supports fully informed voluntary consent without any forms of coercion or restriction in all medical decision-making. She is a long-time advocate for patient autonomy, evidence-based decision-making, protection of the patient-doctor relationship, and an accessible, quality healthcare system,” according to a crowd-funding website, which helped Dr Gill raise funds.
Urgent. Please donate what you can:https://t.co/b0cc5pZIBkThe power of crowdfunding is that each donation is impactful: if half of my followers donated $2 each (forgoing cost of a coffee), we’ll be near the goal of $300K. I only have 8 days left to reach the fundraising goal. https://t.co/cVc7v0mDlX pic.twitter.com/NAvf6vZWcm

“In the summer of 2020, Dr. Gill was one of the first Canadian physicians to bravely speak out publicly on social media about the catastrophic and irreparable harms of lockdowns. She quickly became the target of an orchestrated malicious online smear campaign that encouraged the public to lodge complaints to her regulatory college. In an attempt to clear her name from spurious defamation, she had launched legal proceedings against those responsible,” the website added.
